What was said in the first post about the the penal code is true. If the country's government were truly following Catholic social teaching, then the doctors would still perform surgery if it could save the mother. I don't think the Catholic Church (which is actually much larger than just the church in Nicargua) should be slighted because this country's government may be mis-interpreting the code.

Hi Gabriel,

1) Tell that to the Nicaraguan gynecologists who are nonetheless afraid, with good reason, that their local law enforcement will interpret the law differently in a way that is not in their favor.

2) The Catholic church is by far the more powerful religious body in Nicaragua, and can set the tone for much of the debate. I don't see the anti-Catholic slant here.

I don't normally read this blog because I only searched for the words "Nicaragua" and "abortion" in the Google search engine and found this. Just wanted to post how I hate this law harder than anyone. Oh, and Ortega sucks for changing stripes like this. Some "leftist" you are.

Your article is either biased or misinformed.
1. The penal code allows surgical intervention to save the life of the mother. This does not include psychological or other subjective reasons, but does not condemn mothers to carry (for instance) ectopical pregnancies to term thus endangering the life of the mother.
2. You attack the catholic church yet all evangelical and other protestant sects in Nicaragua support the ban, so your anti-catholic rethoric is out of order and contrary to reality. 90% of the population support the ban on abortion on demand.
