It is rather hilarious to see how Brazil keeps undermining the Obama administration's efforts to push trade and a foreign policy for Latin America and the Caribbean under a rug. All during the campaign, the Obama inner circle from Chicago downplayed both topics so that the White House is now caught flat footed and unable to effectively respond. More power to Brazil for showing up rampant US hypocrisy whether it be on free trade, support for democracy, or the creation of a viable and independent Palestinian state!

@Garrett Connelly: *ALL* farm subsidies since WW2 are just means of funneling money through farmers into chemical companies. No one wants to subsidise chemical companies but these can be spun as "supporting farmers" and of course "family farmers" and gain popular support. Anyone who opposes "supporting family farmers" is committing political suicide. This is just as true for soy, wheat, corn, dairy and meat as it is for cotton. The only winners are DuPont, Monsanto, Dow, etc. If agricultural subsidies ceased to exist overnight, there would be a "correction" among farmers, but a much bigger "correction" in the chemical intensive, genetically modified methods that are used; the only ones "going hungry" would be the CEOs of certain chemical and "bio-tech" companies.

The US was founded on principles of a free economy, but that's become nothing more than a farce in recent years. The US is a parody of capitalist ideology in the same way that China is now a parody of communist ideology.

Cotton is among the most chemical dependent crops, thus, increased cotton production is also a major subsidy for chemical and oil industries.
