The struggle in Panama has intensified exponentially since this article was written. Escalating and unrelenting attacks against the poorest and most defenseless of Panama's citizens, have continued despite the change of regime, forcing native indians from their ancestral homes in order to satisfy those "big business" demands. Rampant human rights violations, uncontrolled environmental abuses -- poisoning water tables, damming rivers and otherwise restricting access to freshwater sources across the country -- along with the enormous and unnecessary risk the canal expansion will take with Gatún Lake, threatening the canal itself, have triggered unprecedented levels of grassroots citizen action groups organizing in Panama, particularly in the province of Chiriqui, Panama's agricultural heartland.
