I note with interest that Sarah Hamburger’s article about IRI being the “Bridge” to the April 2002 Venezuela coup attempt has been picked up by Havana’s Granma, voice of the Cuban dictatorship. However, her proposition that IRI was central to the 2002 events in Venezuela appears to contain factual errors (among them that IRI gives funding to political parties) and omissions (among them that IRI’s current President has repeatedly disowned and apologized for his predecessor’s statement, and that the State Department’s OIG concluded that there was “no reason to believe that, despite its controversial statement. IRI played any role in removing President Chavez”).

Once again, rather than discussing relevant issues like the 26 edicts Chavez recently announced and the subsequent protests, COHA, in its typically non-partisan way, instead chooses to focus on lobbing political mini-grenades at John McCain. This is all old news. You're grabbing at straws, guys.

We regret that you are working with incorrect information. The work of IRI in Venezuela is completely legal and it serves as support in training od the directors that are fighting to defend democratic values in Venezuela. The IRI works in full agreement with its strategic allies. We know for sure that there is a respectful relationship between the entities and that they comply with the requirements necessary to cover specific needs in specific areas. Additionally, all of the efforts are conducted in perfect sinchronicity with the majority, the polotocal respect abd the support of values. We deeply regret the unfounded criticism against IRI. We, with much responsibility can say that we count on an ally that works positively for our country, that ally is IRI.

Perhaps COHA should sponsor Sarah Hamburger on a fact-finding trip to Venezuela before assigning her projects on topics she clearly does not understand. Given her criticism that IRI has limited interaction with Chavistas, I'm curious to know when and with whom she met at the NED, the IRI, Primero Justicia, Súmate, MAS, COPEI or any of the other pro-democracy groups she mentions, prior to publishing this piece in order to gain an accurate assessment of what the real political situation in Venezuela is and what groups like the IRI, the NDI and dozens of others do to help the people of Venezuela.

The Council of Hemispheric Affairs, (COHA) -- or the Larry Birns Group -- has been peddling disinformation for years. This "report" on IRI and Venezuela, Haiti is more of the same. The organization can best be described as a fact-free zone. The only thing one can be certain of is its affection for left-wing autocrats and aspiring dictators.
