Dear COHA:

My name is José López from Bayamón, Puerto Rico. I am contacting you to see if you could help.

The United Nations' (UN) Decolonization Committee is in its third decade of trying to eradicate colonialism in the world. In that effort, it holds a hearing every year around June (the month New York City holds its Puerto Rican Day Parade) to discuss Puerto Rico's colonial situation.

It would be helpful if in next year's discussion there could be a full house in the hearing room with people interested in the decolonization of Puerto Rico. This hearing is not well publicized since some people would like to maintain the status quo forever.

Could your organization spread the word out to your people so that those interested in attending the June 2012 hearing could do so? The exact date has not yet been determined by the UN.

Thank you for your time in this matter!

Sincerely,

José M. López Sierra

Please people read the Insular Cases. In Americana, in terms of jurisprudence, there is no space for Puerto Rican State. Non-Incorporated territories are condemned to self-determination and independence, only Incorporated Territories are called to become states in the future. This is something that not even the Congress will recognize. Because, of course, the Pentagon will pressure enough, as always, to avoid loosing its military enclave. The Pentagon decides with its powerful lobby.

Also, please, this COHA "researchers", please improve and intensify your research. In the last 60 years all efforts in Congress to "decolonized" Puerto Rico have failed. Just because congressmen are so afraid of including statehood as an option for the conclusion of the Puerto Rican political standoff. Please read, research, talk to people for which this issue is near and dear to them.

Superficial research will only increase the traditional misunderstanding and confusion on this issue.

Let us hope that Puerto Rico does not decide to emulate the rogue state of Texas. One of those is more than enough.

I expect that the future status of Puerto Rico will depend in large measure on what happens in Cuba in the near term. If history is a guide, the US will move incorporate Puerto Rico via statehood in order to "ensure" a strategic military advantage in the Caribbean.
