I am a U.S. citizen who has lived in Nicaragua for 6 years. My wife is Nicaraguan as are many of my friends. If there were any doubts as to who controls the CPC, everyone here understands now they are agents of the Ortegas and were put in place to help "el commandante" build a cuban-style police state. The Ortegas' own the Supreme Court and the Electoral commision have completely neutralized the political opposition through threats, blackmail, and bribery. This is not about Sandanismo- this is about complete power for the Ortega-Murillo family. Daniel was elected(with 38% of the vote) by splitting the opposition and proclaiming he was "the New Daniel". Leading up to the election, he dropped all his Marxist rhetoric and turned into a social democrat. Once he was elected, he was the old Daniel. Back to the Future. Nicaragua has returned to the 80s with a vengeance.

The Ortegas were the last thing this sad country needed. Very shortly, the violence will start. Many foreigners have already left, and the real estate market has virtually collapsed.

My wife and I have already made plans to leave. May God have mercy on Nicaragua.

The second coming of unrepentant piñatero Daniel Ortega is the result of the inept and utterly illogical actions of the American ambassador Paul Trivelli. Following the mandates of the State Department and their "experts", the policy of the U.S. resulted in splitting the opposition.

Trivelli is just another of clueless ambassadors that have fumbled the ball and harmed the long term interests of the United Stated. Let us not forget Pezzullo.

It is clear however, that the key to neutralizing Ortega's FSLN is to have a united front by the opposition parties in Nicaragua. Alas, this will be hard to do in a country whose political leaders are opportunists always ready to sell themselves to the highest bidder.

Montealegre and Aleman need to step aside, as these two figures are subject to political blackmail by the sandinistas. Aleman is a virtual hostage of Ortega. Montealegre is suspected of insider trading scheme that followed the collapse of several private banks in Nicaragua. Ortega using the politicized courts, is threatening Montealegre with an indictment .

There is a glimmer of hope, with the budding "bloc against the dictatorship" which has denounced Ortega's recycled trappings of the Sandinista repressive apparatus of the 1980's, such as the infamous neighborhood watch committees.

The real issue now is, since Ortega resists the concepts of checks on presidential power and the concept of balance between branches of government and the citizens, does this resemble the old Somoza regime or the former Sandinista regime? Will the people be better off or worse off?
