Oops, I meant to finally add that if anyone is serious about us getting out of this mess, they should be stopping at no more than two tubbies, consuming more modestly and encouraging their friends and neighbors to do the same. I know, good luck with that ;)

I regard all societies as having pretty much the same make-up. You have the ones who seek to subvert and/or suppress, some who are just the right person to lead, some who just want to live and some who are pro-active; there's probably more groups, but you get the idea I'm sure.

The biggest issue here is working out how to keep people with sinister motives out of the way so that societies can help themselves. That would be a worthwhile debate.

While technology will assist, it seems more prudent to rely on common sense :)

Dear Alex,

I read your article with interest.

In the spirit of debate, may I play the Devils advocate?

Firstly, may I say that mankind has produced more Tubbies (babies) than we can sustain particularly as consumerism per person increases :). This is going to hurt a lot ;)

While I agree that many threats or issues are pure fancy, there are countless numbers who are displaced/disadvantaged as a result of a large influx of people into their communities. And racism/bigotry are rife within all races (like it or not) - dealing with the resulting ghettos is a huge problem - and to put it simply, you can't. (But that's a whole other story and I don't want to detract from my story).

I read your point regarding bringing migrants in allows us to potentially reduce environmental harm among other things and did give it some consideration. In truth, I can't see it working. The people that would be coming to America would be predominantly those who have the means and awareness to do so. This would have the undesired effect of making the countries dumber because the more intelligent and motivated are just abandoning their sinking ship rather than trying to help rebuild their communities.

I do understand that for the most part, it is corruption that has been behind a lot of the issues these countries face, but then again, you are also inviting people who have been victimized and persecuted for years, and these scars are deep - and no small portion of them blame America or the West (and not without reasonable cause). Many are happy to take what you hand out, but don't expect them to thank you for it. It is humiliating for many of them to accept charity from their persecutor.

Lastly, as mentioned, my belief is over population is our most serious threat. The people that are coming from these countries are used to having most of their children die. When they come to countries with better health systems, they don't change their breeding habits. So, all of a sudden they have 7 children surviving. While this typically dies out in a generation or two, the mid to long term effect of the resulting population explosion is hard to measure let alone prepare for.

Lastly, look at the UK's joining the EU. The flow inward is still going and is showing no sign of slowing. The effect on over burdened services is growing. While you might say they should have planned ahead, historical evidence of governments planning for foreseeable issues is rare :)

I'd be interested in your thoughts on this article? http://www.optimumpopulation.org/opt.release30May06.htm

well, thanks for reading

kind regards
