What's been glossed over is the fact that Ecuador's political parties were and still are structurally weak and that majorities behind presidents have too often proven circumstantial. The parties of Correa (Alianza PAIS), Gutierrez (PSP) and Noboa (PRIAN) all reflect this- they are simply personal vehicles for these three men. It also shows in the general weakening of most of the traditional parties prior to the rise of these three, except for the PSC. But the Assembly elected last year does have a wide range of voices and local interest groups represented, and that's either beneficial or detrimental to Correa.

I don't know that this essay is really all that different from Weeks' previous attempt that COHA withdrew. It does correct some glaring factual errors, but why start with 1940 and the (fraudulent) election of Arroyo del Rio? It is a very weird place to start any essay on Ecuadorian politics. More importantly, politically Weeks still embraces a fundamentally conservative attitude toward institutional power (which she calls "democracy") as opposed to issues of social justice and the rights of the people (what some people might call participatory democracy). This is not a piece that sides with, or is sympathetic to, popular movements in Ecuador.
