COHA finally took a good look around at reality. Chavez has been a coercive leader for years, but when COHA finally takes notice, you know things have really gone downhill. There is really no good reason for 'cadenas' that last hours. Every movie about a dystopic future depicts a president whose face is on TV for several hours a day. However, Venezuela appears to be living through a similar sort of situation, with the president trying to maximize his media coverage by any means necessary. Chavez will only radicalize as the 2012 elections draw near. Cornered and rapidly losing support, Chavez could become even more coercive in an attempt to stay in power. I'm surprised the article writer did not take note of the fact that all internet in Venezuela now is piped through a 'single gateway', CAN TV. A state-owned company, CAN TV can now shut down all internet in Venezuela if it so wished.

Ha! This is perhaps the dumbest, most sycophantic, most superficial and downright naive and idiotic appraisal of present-day Venezuela! Reliance on hydroelectric power is not a sign of "environmental friendliness", it's because it's reasonably efficient and the national grid hasn't been significantly updated since Guri and the other major dams were constructed! As for the lack of opposition participation in the democratic process, that is an insult by imbecilic academics! Do you not realize that Chavez pretty much attempts to limit ANY opposition or direct threats, as a good dictator should? Or is the Falcon-Chavez spat right now a collective hallucination? These are just a few problems in this quite idiotic piece. Get a damn clue.

Very good and informative article. It is refreshing to see how despite all the ransacking and poverty in which the Colonizers in the 15th hundreds left Latin America, Brazil actually is becoming a powerful nation, a great model, and a new leader in Latin America. Something to emulate. They are, what the US chose not to be for their neighbors in the south, a benevolent nation. This is indeed a new era for Latin America!

How is Brazil a guardian of democracy? Lula's classless riposte when asked about Cuban hunger striker Guillermo Farinas showed that Brazil still has a long way to go if it is to be a moral leader as well as an economic leader in the region. While hugging Raul Castro, Lula attempted to draw an equivalence between Farinas and Brazilian criminals, saying that a state cannot simply release its prisoners just because the international community demands it. Lula's lack of attention to the civil liberties situation in Cuba shows that Brazil can look the other way just as easily as Washington, and that Lula appears more interested in a UN position than in promoting human rights in the hemisphere.

The WSF has prompted the organizing of many regional social forums, including the Americas Social Forum, European Social Forum, the Asian Social Forum, the Mediterranean Social Forum and the Southern Africa Social Forum. There are also many local and national social forums, such as the Italian Social Forum, India Social Forum etc.
