The Council on Hemispheric Affairs (COHA) will be issuing research data and other reports and analysis relating to Venezuela’s October 7 presidential elections frequently, on occasion several times daily. The COHA Venezuela Electoral Working Group will be issuing a wide spectrum of material on incumbent Hugo Chávez and opposition candidate Henrique Capriles in order to cast light on the issues at stake, in addition to the different electoral outcomes for Caracas.

COHA will also take calls from the media in order to relay factual material on the elections, including the significance of various names and agencies and the range of facts that might be relevant. These issues include press freedom, the role of the military in Venezuelan society, Washington’s stormy relationship with Caracas, as well as the role of trade unions and the influence of business to their operations in the wake of a Capriles or Chávez victory.
