Over the last two weeks, the COHA Blog has been evolving, now adding immigration to its agenda of issues being addressed from a variety of different perspectives. This piece discusses the relationship between the stream of money sent back home by Latino immigrants working in the U.S. to an increasingly restrictive border, the diminishing world value of U.S. earnings, and strong economic growth in many Latin American Countries. While millions of families in the region rely on remittances sent by husbands, wives, and children living abroad to survive, many factors may cause this relationship to stabilize or even reverse in the coming years as Latin America becomes more independent of the U.S. Next Tuesday, we will showcase the concept of the “New Latin America,” launching another two week series. In it, we will discuss how different aspects in Latin America have evolved over the years while others still remain the same. Source: El Extra Express

On Thursday, May 19, President Obama took the bold step of publically proposing a solution to the current Israeli-Palestinian peace deliberations, reverting to the terms of Israel’s pre-1967 borders. In the wake of the killing of Osama bin Laden and mounting Arab revolts against authoritarian rule throughout the region, this announcement has become one of the first and one of the most pressing of the international issues he finds himself confronting. This in turn raises the longstanding question: Will Latin America have a shot at becoming a major priority for U.S. foreign policy making in a post-bin Laden era? Of course, Washington’s lack of attention toward the region is hardly a novelty. The war on terror arguably has become the administration’s main foreign policy focus in the last ten years, as Latin American affairs were systematically overlooked. In 2001, former Mexican President Vicente Fox and former American President George W. Bush finally met to tackle illegal immigration and open their joint borders. But soon after the September 11 attacks in Washington, D.C. and New York City, a 700-mile fence across the U.S.-Mexico border was erected, sparking criticism from Latinos both in the United States and south of the Rio [...]

The recent deaths of two terrorists – one famous, one not so much – provides an illuminating examination of how America continues to conduct its controversial war on terror. Making headlines across the United States and called a defining moment in Barack Obama’s presidency, the dramatic raid into Pakistan to kill Osama Bin Laden is one side of the equation. The quiet passing of Orlando Bosch in Miami that elicited scant attention outside the confines of the South Florida community, is the other. While it would be hard to find an American who hasn’t heard of Bin Laden, the converse is true of Bosch, unless you happen to live in Miami’s Little Havana neighborhood. This despite Bosch’s much more protracted career of violence, stretching back to the early 1960s. His terrorism, however, was directed at the Cuban people who have, for the most part, supported the regime that came to power following the Revolution in 1959 and that has been designated an official enemy of the United States. Bosch’s actions were rarely, if ever, recognized as terrorism in the mainstream media, which generally kept silent when it came to describing the consequences of his use of violent methods to oppose [...]

On April 24, 2011, hundreds of classified documents regarding the military prison camp maintained by the U.S. Government at Guantánamo Bay, Cuba, were released to The New York Times and National Public Radio (NPR). The documents had originally been turned over to WikiLeaks, but both the Times and NPR maintain that WikiLeaks was not their source. Among the documents distributed were the profiles of several prominent inmates of the facility, reports regarding life at the prison, and a “threat matrix” that clarifies how to classify different inmates based upon their individual risk levels. The release of these documents turned out to be a massive embarrassment to the United States and should have been a wake-up call, adding to the growing list of arguments to expedite the termination of the institution. This debate will likely intensify with the gunning down of Osama bin Laden on May 2. The “threat matrix” in particular exemplifies how unrefined the detainment process has been at the infamous facility. This two-page document outlines whether an inmate should be indefinitely held, transferred somewhere else, or be released, according to his “risk” level and any information the detainee was thought to possess. The document also recommends how to [...]
